He says not. Others say yes.

Who really knows? per wikipedia: Adams has stated repeatedly that he has never been a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). However, noted scholars such as Ed Moloney, Richard English, Peter Taylor and Mark Urban have all named Adams to be part of the IRA leadership since the 1970s. Adams has denied Moloney's claims, calling them "libellous," however he has not taken legal action against Moloney.

Probably, much evidence points to that. He is still a hero to many in Ireland and the world over.

He claims that he has never been a member of PIRA. It is beyond belief that he should claim this when Sinn Fein, of which he has been the president for many years, started life as the political wing of the IRA. Here are two equally biased accounts of his life, one from Sinn Fein and one from an opposing organisation: http://sinnfein.org/documents/gerry.html http://www.residentgroups.fsnet.co.uk/ga.htm
