freedom and peace should be humanity's goal. . But humanity has made LITTLE progress towards that. . Why would simple progress be more desired than freedom itself? . I'm male, middle-aged, white, and religion affiliated.

Humanity has an ultimate goal: "Brotherhood of Man". Progress can be halted, freedom is at least self-limited, peace can only happen, when all of mankind work towards understanding each other......

Survival. All of humanity's goals stem from its ultimate goal of survival. We want to save the Earth, because of the sense that we depend on its ecosystems and weather systems for survival. We want peace, because we sense that this would allow us all to survive. We want happiness, because happiness is a sign of surviving well. It is not a personal, intellectually created goal that we all share. Survival is an inherent and therefore rather impersonal drive which manifests itself in the above goals. Interestingly, bluntly stating that our ultimate goal is survival, doesn't properly guide or motivate us to fulfill it. So we find more effective ways... because we must survive.

Very Interesting and thought provoking question! Obviously we are driven by survival, and as humans we survive by changing our environment rather than adapting to it, but surely we are (as a species) surviving too well already? It seems than all the new alterations we are making to our environment (ie: new technology etc) are aimed towards an ultimate goal of stupidly easy survival, where we do not have to put any effort into anything and there is no risk of not getting what we want when we want it! It seems that every advance we make is set to make some task or other physically or mentally easier, heading straight down the road of being completely satisfied at all times without the inconvenience of thinking or moving. The scary part of this prediction is that when we have a perfect environment, we will not need to change it anymore, and our survival method will revert to adapting. We will adapt to this perfect environment by evolving to be stupider and more lazy until we reach a point where if ever anything goes wrong with our perfect environment (computer crash, earthquake, robot rebellion etc.) We will not be able to deal with it, as we would not even have the survival skills of monkeys! These are just my thoughts which I thought of as I wrote them. I am a moderately religious white Australian male in my early 20s.

our first goal is to survive, but this is basic. survival is only half of our existence, and is usually taken care of by our instinct. Our more important goal is to create. It is fulfilled in the creation of this question and in its answers. We are constantly creating, even choosing, our problems, ideas, religions, you name it. some create right and wrong, and then try to fulfill a life of their own definitions. Some choose not to choose, which is a choice in itself! Everything is creation, we are part of an unfolding universe. Creation is so involved in everything and anything its almost hard to grasp because since everything is creation, what can we compare it to? We know white is white because of black. We know what life is because of death. But what can we compare creation to? Even destruction is a form of creation, it is something simply changing into something else. Think about it. What is our goal? its your obligation to create one. male, canadian, 18, non-religious
