If humans are great because we have thumbs, why do we have 5 fingers instead of just a thumb and forefinger?

First off, the hand would be significantly less useful. Imagine trying to pick something up.. it would be not nearly as easy. If it actually was advantageous, people with mutations that resulted in the exclusive thumb/forefinger setup would be more likely to survive and multiply, and would pass the gene on to their children.

well since everyone thinks we came from monkeys which we prob did then its cuz monkeys r the only creatures who have a thumb. not answering the question, tho. we would be absolutely useless if we only had a thumb in a forefinger. imagine everyday things u do with ALL 5 fingers and then imagine it with just 2. its hard to think bout thats my point. actually this kinda goes to genetics and all that crap and the monkey business and how they passed having 5 fingers AND a thumb down to us.
