Peanuts are legumes, in the same family as peas, beans, soy, lentils, and alfalfa. Since tree nuts such as almonds and hazelnuts are not legumes, many individuals with peanut allergy can tolerate tree nuts. HOWEVER, apparently sensitization to tree nuts can occur. More importantly, since peanuts are often processed at the same facilities with other nuts, peanut residue can be found in other nut and food products that nominally do not contain peanuts or peanut products. To be on the safe side those who suffer with extreme peanut allergy are often advised to avoid all nut products. Technically yes, most peanut allergy sufferers can eat other nuts. In practice most don't, and its not a good idea, as peanuts are often packaged and processed in the same factories that package and process other nuts. The chance of peanut traces being found in other nut varieties (particularly snack nuts, such as salted cashews) is fairly high, and for this reason many peanut allergy sufferers will avoid all nuts and nut products.
