Question

Help answer this question below.

Last night my snake bit a baby rat by the butt & was constricting for about 20 mins. The rat was squealing the whole time. My hubby was on the verge of tears & mad @ me for not being remorseful. It's the food chain, after all. Should I have felt bad?

i dont usually side with rats... but if the rat was squealing so much, maybe i would have tried to kill the rat myself if possible, to end the pain.

i dont have pet snakes, so i'm not sure if that is possible....

- No he had a good grip. If I did that, he definately would have bitten me & then given up on the rat & not tried to eat or kill it. I hate seeing them suffer but he just bit the wroong end. He was totally off his game because he started eatign it butt 1st & they usually don't do that...it's always head 1st.

Well, I keep rats so I think would make me cry to hear that.

However, talking realistically, that is the food chain. And nature is a bitch.

Can you not feed the snake pre-killed rats?

- I tried it before & they don't want anything to do w/ them. They like to "hunt" for their food, especially the little one. It was funny watching my hubby because he kept checking on him to make sure that he was dying & I saw him walk out of the room & make the Sign Of The Cross. That's when I lost it & fell on the floor laughing. That's when he called me a heartless bitch. It was only funny because that is something my mom would have done if she were alive. She would have left the house if it was feeding time actually cuz she loves all animals.

I have had pet rats and pet snakes. I enjoyed the company of the snakes more but that's neither here nor their. I think that there is nothing wrong with feeling badly for a struggling animal, but knowing that it's God's greater plan helps. No need to lose sleep over it, but feeling bad for another's pain is honorable.

It is better to get your snake on prekill.

It is more humane for the prey item and your snake is less likely to be injured by a prey item.

It is also really easy to do.

- I don't think that they would know what to do w/ prekill. They like the hunt, especially the smaller one. I tried prekill when I got my 1st snake & she didn't take it. Prekill costs more & it deprives the snake it's natural instinct to hunt for it's food. It's bad enough they are captive, but they get fed dead rats too? That would be a shitty life as a snake.

- I found it really easy to get mine on prekill and prekilled the prey myself so it was as cheap as normal feeding. Also, it was very convenient to have a stockpile of prey items in the freezer for when I could not get out to get any or there were none available (I had a 200+ pound burmese python as well as smaller snakes and sometimes getting the feeder rabbits was hard to do).

  I have head that it is more difficult to get ball pythons on prekill but it is possible. Sometimes you have to smear the prey item with its brains to get the snake started.

  I suggest, if you are not already doing so, to not leave your snake in a tank unsupervised with a live prey item. I have seen so many injuries, including deaths, of snakes due to this. I have no clue why they do not fight back.

- My freezer was, to most people, a scary place. I had, at the time, the following snakes: the big burmese, a 7 pound common boa, 3 sand boas, 1 dumeril's boa.

It's the natural food chain but...you can buy them dead already and frozen..but make sure you thaw them out first..or you could kill your snake :)

- I tried already & they don't go for it. they both like to hunt the rat. The little ones actually toys w/ the rat for awhile like it gives it a false sense of comfort & then WHAM. Yes I'm sick but I love to watch snakes eat.

Well I have rats as pets and they are very intellegent and loving creatures. Unlike some people. Seems like you have the perfect pet. Satan loves snakes to.I do believe your hubby has a point with what he called you.

- On the contrary, snakes are VERY smart. That's why they are a higher chain level than rats. Rats are only good for one thing...apex predator meals. Snakes know who takes care of them & are very loyal & lovable. Tell mw when you actually have raised one & you'll see that I am right. Sorry, but rats are vermin. They carry disease & are useless. Snakes don't eat whatever you feed them. Try dropping a frog in a pythons cage & you'll understand.
