I think the point is not the absentee parent, but how the remaining parent treats the child. I think there is far too much importance placed on roles that are "supposed" to be played by parents based on their sex. If you love that child and they know that, surely trying too hard to compensate for the missing parent may highlight the fact that a parent is not there. How many relationships do you think there have been where in actual fact it would have been better for everybody concerned if one of the parents wasn't there!

The most detrimental is a parent that causes the other parent's absence...especially through causing the child to hate or distrust the other parent. This is known as Parental Alienation Syndrome and can cause long term damage to the child.
