  • Consciousness is a debatable aspect of humanity, from what I read. In fact, it seems to have been debated for many, many years. I will answer this, in relation to me. I can be conscious by remembering, reflecting. By trying to understand, and acting upon the ideas that I engineer in my mind. I think my thoughts and actions represent a level of consciousness that make me different from a rock, or a tree. Also, I think my dreams, and fantasies make me conscious as well.   What a great question! Thank you.
  • I personally believe that to be conscious is to be aware of the word around us and how I as an individual impact or make my mark on the world and everthing in it.
  • I think that there is no aspect of mind that is more familiar or more puzzling than consciousness and our conscious experience of self and world.
  • We can focus on thinking clearly without having that focus impinged upon by emotions or pain.
  • Never tried it , never will, it's just not right somehow.
  • Good question, but ultimately an unanswerable one. If you and I have similar bodies, similar brains, similar circuitry in our brains, why then am I *me* and not you?
  • We're not. It just feels that way when we ask the question. I mean, can you HONESTLY tell me what you were thinking just before you read this answer? Or do you have to construct a narrative after the fact? I think we are conscious only when we construct these narratives, frankly.
  • Do you mean in what ways can we be conscious or are you debating the very existence of our consciousness ?
  • Don't drink so much
  • The only way to be conscious is to be staying conscientiously conscious. The five senses we are endowed with keep feeding our minds with sensations of the circumstances around us. Our brain and minds interprets the sensations to suit their convenience. This is not being conscious. Mind is too unreliable an interpreter. Mind tends to be selective. A true picture will not emerge with the mind working on perception. To be conscious we must involve our intellect in the interpretation process. With the adoption of intellect as the force behind all perception we can be truly conscious.
  • Instincts are unconscious, they are made conscious through thoughts, and actions. Without getting into specific detail, we are technically unconscious and never will be trully conscious, unless we act solely upon our instincts. So I guess the answer is, acting upon your instincts makes you conscious.
