She sold them to tourists who are too lazy to go out and collect them themselves. She sells them to artists who paint on them and have no spare time to collect them themselves. She's retired and doesn't care how many or how few she sells as long as it gets her out of the house - her husband is retired too and drives her crazy, what with trying to organize everything in the kitchen alphabetically and trying to tell her the most efficient way that SHE can do the housework.

She was Mary Anning, discoverer of various fossils at Lyme Regis, and though she became a famous geologist, she started off selling stuff that she'd picked up, on the cliffs and the beach, to richer people who didn't want to get dirty. She lived from about 1800 to 1850, not too sure of dates.
