People who have no family, or money and are found dead, are usually buried by the taxpayers. The death arraingements will usually be handled by the medical examiner in that county. In all cases, the bodies are usually cremated and the remains are kept in storage until someone claims them.

Sadly, there are too many homeless people in this Country, however if a homeless person dies, the medical examiner and police will "try" to locate next of kin if they know the deceased name. If they ask around and search, he/she becomes Jane or John Doe.

Most cities have their own disposal procedures, and I don't mean to sound insensitive unto the subject, but as Sgt. Spanky mentioned, its usually someone in the coroners office that will attend to the found corpse. Some will cremate, but others have a burial area, usually no grass, or trees, basically an open dirt lot where they will place a placard into the ground that has a number on it. It's a mass grave arrangement, where they are buried in a thin pine box that is usually 2 high and 4 wide. If cremated, they usually bury them as well in similar fashion, but there will be more placed into the individual plot. the placard is to identify to whom was placed in to it, and the list is usually posted in a public area, for a certain period of time, then goes into a registrars book. Some have websites also for next of kin or friends, as it also comes part of one's missing persons process. Now that is for those identified through ID Fingerprints, dental records, etc. They may be indigents, or just the poor, as well as those found all alone with no death benefits to pay for burial. The unknowns are put through the same process, but if a DOE status comes, it's as the Sarge above put it, they go into storage till the time they can be identified. sad endings come to those to whom passed sadly no doubt. Sometimes humanity can only reach so far into the dark side of society, and like processed meat, they do go. Nice bit of asking, it truly makes one think about their destined demise, as well as others. Be well, and Peace!

They do get a burial place if no one is there to clame them then they just keep record of them by numbers or how ever the state decides on labeling the person. they put then in certain grave yards

One of the things that CAN happen to their cadaver is that it may be used to make medical anatomical models. I refer to those simulcrams in plastic which are used in classrooms, Medical settings etc to demonstrate what verious organs, wounds/injuries/deformities appear like. I once visited a place of manufacture of such items, near Waco in Texas. The Supervisor informed us that the 'moulds' for the products were obtained from the bodies of indigents in major cities across America who died as unidentifiables. After a certain amount of time, set by local or State statute, these bodies would be taken from the vat of formaldehyde in which they were stored, and sold to the highest bidder among the medical model manufacturers.

Some cities have a place known as 'Potter's Field' where homeless people are buried in cheap coffins. From Wikipedia: A potter's field is a place for the burial of unknown or indigent people.
