I have seen it to, and you know what, thinking about it, it wasn't that great at all. I'm sorry, I have no idea why people think its so great, but I do agree that it isn't

Because it brings everyone back to their childhood.. to Christmas magic. Most families always go and see it and it's like a tradition... I love it. It's fun to watch and even more fun to perform.

I think it's because so many youngsters get to be a part of such a Classic. I'm a teacher I've seen it at least 75x's. After 2x's I was pretty much done with it. The only possible reason is parents love to see their children on stage. And the kids have a time they will never forget.

The ballet isn't great; the story is silly. The music, however, is charming though not up to the level of Tchaikowsky's main works. I agree with the previous answerers that it has become a tradition and that people like to see their kids dancing (there's got to be SOME reason they paid for all those lessons). Tchaikowsky himself did not hold this music suite in very high esteem. My favorite is Swan Lake. I've seen it several times, listened to it many more time, and it moves me every time. The music is evocative, beautiful, at times sublime.

Maybe because it's celebrating a popular holiday.

One very simple reason;it was one of the very first full-length ballets to ever be televised. And I would hazard to say that it's probably the most televised ballet ever. Also because it's a seasonal ballet that's almost always done during the Christmas holidays makes for it's popularity. It's become something that people are supposed to see; the ole bandwagon affect. Like the movie "Citizen Kane". Same thing.
