I was told that the "position 5" on the VIN of a 1978 Corvette should have the letters "L" or "H", but the car I'm researching has the number "4" in the VIN's position-5. Can someone clarify. Thanks.

does the car have thirteen or sixteen digits in the v.i.n if its got sixteen its not a seventy eight

Here is the VIN card from 1978. The way I read it the "4" in the 5th position means the car has a 350 with a 4BBL carb made by Chevrolet and use only in Chevys. The "H" engine was a 305 4BBL made by Chevrolet and used by Chevy, Olds, Pontiac and Buick. The "L" engine was a 350 4BBL made by Chevrolet or GM of Canada and used in everything except a Cadillac or GM Overseas vehicles. If I was looking at a Corvette, I would rather have one with an engine made by Chevy and used only in Chevys, but thats just my opinion. Hope this helps!
