It is a tributary of the Arkansas River. It runs from western Oklahoma through the Texas Panhandle and into northeastern New Mexico. It isn't really a "river." It is usually dry or at best a small trickle, with a few stagnant ponds and is dotted with quicksand. In times of rain and flooding it can be many feet wide and several feet deep. No one is quite sure of the origin of the name. Some historians think it was named by some French traders that came south from Canada.
