Why do they need to be relevant? They're funny and entertaining in their own right, and there is no need for the series to "say anything about today's armed conflict...can't art be appreciated for it's own sake?

I would say so.It showed the death, destruction and futility of the Korean war.It was straight forward showing that there is no glory in war, just more pain to the local civilians. The same story happened years later with the disgrace of the Vietnam war when the USA was looked down on by the rest of the word.It is relevant today with another useless war in Iraq,Afganistan, and starting in Pakistan.

I worked with this guy who used to serve in the army, and he was a little odd (he claimed that he had Gulf War Syndrome). He loved MASH, everyday he would come in and talk about the previous evening's rerun. He talked about those old episodes with such excitement that you'd think he was talking about real people. Perhaps that show is more relevant to those who served in the armed forces.

My son has said that it reminds him of the camaraderie and sense of humor that you have to keep with you at all times just to keep your sanity.

I think the later series (6 onwards or so) are still very relevent, as they had more of a message. The old ones were still good, but I think it got better with time, especially with the introduction of BJ and Winchester, who had far more depth than the childish Trapper and whiny Frank. Also, it was far better when Hawkeye and Hot Lips put their differences aside after her divorce :)

Well, I think it's hilarious that the show ran for 12 years. The US/Korean conflict lasted just a little over a year and a half.
