Mostly I like talking to my bosses in the face. I just think it's a lot better and builds a better base of trust and understanding. Over the phone is ok for when I'm sick and really can't get up to go tell them and come back. Or when I call in, but everything else I talk to them face to face. :D

We've got a new owner of our company. This guy has talked to me more than all bosses I've had combined in this past month he owned the place. I really don't like talking to bosses, just let me do my job. However, he gave us a raise, and I didn't even have to go in and ask than negotiate a term as I've done in the past, and it was very generous. Also, the health insurance premiums were just lowered without negotiations. So, this past week, it has been done with a huge smile. :-D

I like communicating by email. I am better with the written word than the spoken, personally. And it's also a good way to cover your ass in certain situations. My boss has a tendency to forget that I've updated her on certain things, so it's great to be able to forward her the update I gave her a week prior so she realizes I already followed through.

My former employer used to talk to me all the time. She would call a lot even when I was off. It drove me crazy. My current boss is very distant. He acknowledges me, but that is about it. I kind of miss communicating.

Face to face, its the only way!

Depends on what I need to communicate. I like face to face for informal stuff, but nothing beats email when you need documentation of the conversation.

Directly...there is more to communication than just the verbal. Body language, tone of voice and the eyes contain about 90% of all communication.
