Help answer this question below.
This varies re locale and state/national laws.
In NC, we are called an "at will" state.
This means that you serve at the employer's pleasure. Neither hiring or firing requires an answer. And typically, if you get one, it has been screened thru a lawyer to be acceptable in case of discrimination concerns.
So, the answer is not necessarily truthful.
You have no right to your employee files.
The employer is only required to provide a confirmation that you were employed and the dates of employment, anymore results in legal exposure.
Now if you are "fired" this must be stated for unemployment benefits. But, again, they may provide a false answer claiming you resigned. You may contest this in court.
Re: employment contracts, other states, and union employees, they above answers may not be appropriate.
Job hunting is such a vulnerable experience, as is firing, it is a shame it cannot be a learning experience as well. The ambiguity of this experience is a real challenge to one's self-esteem.
I'm not sure about hiring..but they should have a reason for firing you, because they cannot fire you for no reason.
