this is complicated so let me TRY to explain it and hope I don't confuse you. Tolerance: if you take a certain drug so long, it will get to where it doesn't work anymore and you will have to increase the dosage or change drugs because your system has built up a tolerance..commonly as in pain pills or antibiotics. that is why MD's say take only as needed because eventually your body builds up a tolerance and they don't work anymore Dependence is something your body needs : for me it's sleeping pills. i cannot sleep no matter how sleepy I am without a sleeping pill. My body is dependant on that pill Addiction is tricky.. addiction is when something is taken NOT for purposes prescribed but to get high or to block problems or feelings. If you were to go OFF this drug, you would suffer withdrawal symtoms, depression, etc. ie)pain pills you take when you are in pain. addiction you would take pain pills like 4 in the morning to get you going, 4 by lunch to keep you going 4 at supper to keep you going 6-7 at bedtime to get you he night, etc.. it's not for purposes of pain..it's to block "some feeling". does that help?

In general there are three types of drug users: 1. normal people who have a neutral reaction to drugs, 2. drug abusers who like to overindulge occasionally, and 3. addicts--need the drugs just to get to normal.
