They push an answer to the bottom of the pile. That's all they do. They can't take away a person's rank or points. Even if you get, say, two people who give you +6 on something and someone else gives you -2, you get 12, not your net total of 10. They affect nothing but your answer placement, unless you let it affect you. *shrug* I like them. some answers belong on the bottom of the pile. A very negative rating tells someone looking for answers that "this one is not worth your time."

points keep a large number of people on this site -- which is an ad-based commercial site that needs heavy traffic. Without points the site's owner doesn't make as much money.

When Answerbag first started, there were no points. Since they added points, a lot more users have signed on and stayed on, so apparently points works, as far as the owners are concerned.

Jeeeeeez. When I hit 100,000 - I was going to trade some in for a brand new tea set as a gift to you! Surely that is not harmful :-P

because if we didn't have negative points, we couldn't have positive points.. get it? how the hell would we know the difference?
