Is it more difficult trying to learn a new language when you are over 40 years old than if you were much younger?

Yes there's a good chance it'll be tougher. But that shouldn't stop you.

Without a doubt, as you get older you brain takes longer to take in the same amount of information so learning a language at a younger age would be easier. It doesn't mean its impossible to learn at 40, just more challenging.
