  • I'm not sure of the official definitions, but knowing that you "bridge a gap", I assume that a brige is anything crossing an otherwise impassable area, like a gorge or river. I guess an overpass just passes over another area, like a highway. You technically can walk across the highway (though it's not recommended), but you couldn't walk across a canyon.

  • I believe a bridge connects two parts of land, whereas an overpass crosses a road or railway...
  • Here in the UK a bridge may carry anything road,rail, water(aquaduct),footpassengers etc. But an overpass is usually appertaining to a road crossing over a road and is usually constructed where it would be impractical (due to volume of traffic) to put a crossroad (intersection) or a roundabout( Do you have these in the states?)
