I'm writing a resume that must have a cover letter, can someone tell me a brief description of a cover letter?

It's basically a letter greeting the potential employer and telling them you've enclosed a copy of your resume applying for such-and-such position. Personally, I find it's easy to use a sample as an idea of how to do my cover letter.
