It comes from the Greek "idiotes", meaning a layman, one lacking in skill. The opposite was "stratiÅtés", meaning a professional, most especially a professional soldier.

Both greek and latin words mean 'thinking of oneself', or being selfish, as 'id' is oneself, and 'io' is of orientation, so being 'self-orientated'! It's not hard to see how this turned into the 'idiot' we use today.
