Shuffling your feet will build up more static, and if you have something metal in your hands, and you touch a metal object, the shock will be unfelt as the metal object in your hand will receive the shock, not you (Try it!). The kids probably touch things more often to ground them out. And the hubby probably doesnt move around as much you :) Edit: Rereading my answer I think I need to clarify my experiment, When you are holding the metal object, touch the object to the metal, dont just hold a metal object and then touch something metal with your hands.. And yes, starting a car (if he was touching the metal part of a key) will remove some static discharge, also, getting in and out of a car will really build up static, especially if you have a fuzzy coat.

Some alternatives: 1) Your footwear doesn't conduct as well as as that of the rest of the family. Perhaps you have rubber soles, for example. 2) Your soles are made of something that collects a static charge better. 3) Your clothing collects more of a static charge. (Nylon is particularly bad for this). 4) Some scientists believe women feel more pain for the same amount of stimulus.
