  • Your creativity is great, but it's hard on kids when their names are too unusual:(
  • not really.... but you will be calling out those names till the day you die, so if you like them, that is what counts. little girls are dainty... like flowers.... i am partial to the names daisy, rose, iris...
  • different, how do you pronouce them?
  • Mariposa, which means butterfly, is a beautiful name, but wouldn't everyone shorten it to Mari? Isla is a little on the strange side, would you pronounce it iss la or eye la? There is a town in Southern California names Isla Vista, pronounced eye la vista.
  • Isla is a nice name and popular in Scotland but I think the other little girl may have a problem unless she is just called Mari. Names that are very unusual can cause derision. I know, my parents made my name up themselves.
  • Not particularly. Obviously most names mean something, and a lot of people probably name their kids without looking it up, but... who names their kid Island? If the kids ever move to a spanish-speaking community (which is more and more places in the U.S.), it'd be even worse.
  • They are unusual names and unfortunately it has been shown in studies that children with unusual names do not do as well in society without extra hard work. Apart from other children being cruel, it has been shown that teachers will mark children with odd names lower than those wihtout.
  • I love those names!!! You must be a Barbie fan...me too! :D
  • I like Isla, obviously because I suggested it :) I'm not big on Mariposa though. Isla (pronounced I-la -- the ''s'' is silent where I come from) isn't really such an off-beat name as everyone is saying. It's not very common, but it's Scottish as well as Spanish and a recognised name, just as ''Jane'' is. Definitely a name I would use. Mariposa is less subtle, I don't know anywhere where that's considered a name and not just the Spanish word for ''butterfly''. My name means ''hyacinth'' in Spanish, and I've never gotten any stick for it.
  • Yes, they are pretty and unusual. If you love it, go for it.
  • They sound like very beatiful names. Very nice.
