  • REM sleep, when most dreams occur, is interesting because the brain paralyzes the body so that the dreams can't be acted out by the body, generally by decreased adenosine and increased GABA, mediated by the pineal gland through melatonin. When this neurotransmission is under-regulated, we get sleepwalking, sleep paralysis and night terrors. In the case of talking in one's sleep, it is because the perceived importance of the information or message overrides the paralysis through sheer will. I have been known to talk in my sleep, though I have not remembered it, and it's generally bizarre but retrospectively interesting conclusions like chemical formulas, answers to important questions or resolutions to personal problems. Talking in one's sleep is also almost always when sleeping on one's back.
