  • Many do. However, this does little for existing structures built before those codes came into existance. Future building requires compliance with those codes, though. That includes rebuilding existing damaged structures.
  • Most do. However, it's rather difficult to plan for what damage might actually be caused. Do you code for cat-3 force winds? cat-5? Or do you code for the building to be able to withstand a Prius shooting at the walls like a cannonball? What about tornadoes? How far inland do you code for the buildings to be able to withstand storm surge? No matter WHAT your answer to those questions, it won't be enough. These storms cause damage, it's what they do. We have no way of predicting how the storm will act or how our buildings will react. That's why many great, modern buildings can be totally wiped out, but the rotting shanty that was built in the 40's remains unharmed.
