  • Sadly, needed in this scary world.
  • I think that's a total violation of privacy. There should always be probable cause. Students need some freedom. Geez.
  • well i would think that if any student would have drugs or a gun that they could check the lockers so the rest of the school would be safe.
  • BS like most of the other rules they had in highschool. Keep the weed at home yo!
  • It is school property. I suppose it would depend on what they are searching for. Searching for illegal things, I wouldn't oppose it. But to add, I think it's something the students need to fight for if they strongly feel that it's an invasion of their privacy...in which case, I would stand behind the students all the way for having the balls to think for themselves.
  • I think there should be some type of probable cause, but these are not owned by the student and are not on the student's private property. If there is cause to think the student is in violation of school rules or the law, I feel it needs to be done. The school can be legally liable in situations were there were suspicions and nothing was done.
  • School is a big public place which is scary. People need a Quantum of Solace. The lockers should be your own private place.
  • Fine with me...if you're not up to something, you've got nothing to worry about then.
  • Hide the drugs and porn? If there's reasonable cause to search the lockers, the school has the right to do it.
  • Here's my opinion. Since they are property of the school, and they are provided simply for the convenience of the student, there isn't much you can say. There are just some things that just shouldn't be in the schools. They are entitled to search at any time to keep the schools safe for everyone. Just as I as a parent would search my kids closet and rooms, occasionally. Not that I enjoyed doing it, but I did find a few disturbing things and was able to head off a few problems before they got out of hand. Now, if they chose to search a student's backpack or purse, I would say they should have probable cause, and the student should be present because that is personal property. I believe though, that in our local schools, the police go through at random times with dogs trained to find certain things, like drugs and weapons, and then they only search when there is probable cause. It has gotten a lot of drugs out of our schools and more than a few firearms. In news interviews, most kids seemed to like this approach and said it made them feel safer at school. I do think they have too many rules that are stupid, and just too restrictive, but I don't mind this one.
  • school property, school's right to search. parent's property, parnent's right to search. student's property, whoever needs search warrent or permission.
  • i think that it saves lives by eliminateing drugs and weapons out of the school system
  • If you know it will be searched at random don't keep anything there for them to find and use against you! If they do it's your fault! Ask the school for permission to have a locker supplied by you on the school grounds and if they intend to search it at random like school lockers!
  • I have no problem with it as long as the student is present at the time. The locker is school property, not private.
  • they save lives by not telling the student they do not try &remove drugs or weapons from thier lockers
  • If you have nothing to hide, what's the problem?
  • I'm all for them. If you have nothing to hide, then there's no reason why you wouldn't want your locker searched. Teenagers are not yet responsible adults.
  • My view is don't have anything the school says not to have in it.
  • Well technically the lockers are the property of the school, and as long as Students are aware of that, the school isn't doing anything wrong. I don't really think it's right but it is necessary in certain situations.
  • I mean, if the student is sketchy enough to have something contraband in his or her locker, he or she is bound to get caught eventually. I'm fine with it.
  • The school does not have the right to violate an individual's privacy with unwarranted searches just as they cannot set up video equipment in the bathrooms. Even if they did, they would not have the right to search a student's backpack hanging within. Now all our schools have done away with lockers, to avoid such silly issues. Of course the kids have 50lbs of books to lug around.
  • I think it is a great way to replenish the supplies for the Teachers lounge.
  • I think it's fine. I don't see any reason to grant students a private locker space, just tell them it's a semi-public locker space.
  • Random locker searches are sick. One of the reasons children in America behave infantile well after they're not children anymore, into their 20s, is because they are to treated infantile shit like this. If a school official has at least a reasonable suspicion (more than just a hunch) that the student's locker needs to be searched, fine.
