  • Some planes are traded between companies several times. Typically they are treated like a car. If they have alot of life left they are sold, if they are worn out they are sold as scrap, torn apart and melted down and recycled. As you know many many items are made from aircraft metals such as aluminium. Here are a couple links that explain the process. http://tinyurl.com/6sxnh4 http://tinyurl.com/5hy38c

  • Some were converted to cargo / freight carriers, but depending upon their Configuration / Model number / number of hours on the airframe / and engine type, ( Turbojet, tuborofan, type of noise suppression, etc ), most of them wound up in the boneyards.
  • They will be transformed in to cokacola can's!
  • Parked in a huge open field in Arizona.
  • In 2000 I visited the airline graveyard in the mojave desert, you are allowed in by invite only. I flew in. . Wow! There were literally hundreds of retired commercial aircraft in this huge field. There were dozens of the big 747's in various states of undress. . I was there because I saw an interesting article about a couple who turned A 747 a house... I could do that! . Turns out a used retired 747 could be bought... cheap! A 747-200 has over 6k floor space... about right for a bedroom... and a bowling ally. . Before they would allow me to purchase one... I would need all transport permits... a proper final resting place... city variances etc etc etc... I figured three years of dedicated work... . I was looking for new construction skyscrapers who would build a cradle on the roof for my plane... there were many costly airspace issues of the surrounding the buildings... I got to know every NYC official of the time... . Then 911 happened... case closed.
