  • Chinese characters are ideograms, which is a geeky way of saying that one character equals one idea. It's hard for English speakers to get this until you point out that we have ideograms of our own. We just don't have that many: ! ? @ # $ % & + - = Think about it. What is there about the shape of $ that means "dollar"? What part of # gives away that you're supposed to say "number"? Answer: nothing. They're ideograms, not letters. One symbol equals one idea, not one sound. So how many 'letters' does Chinese writing have? The quick answer is "none, wrong question." If the question is how many 'characters' does Chinese writing have, the is somewhere between about 500 and about 50,000, depending on how you slice things. from: http://mg3ca.vox.com/library/post/%E6%88%91%E5%AD%A6%E6%BC%A2%E8%AA%9E-so-how-many-letters-does-chinese-have.html
