Why would the government fake the moon landing? I don't understand the reasoning behind the theory.

The Moon landing conspiracy theory purports that the entire thing was faked because the US government lacked the capability to send a man to the moon yet needed to show that the US could accomplish the feat before the Soviets could accomplish it.

The President was so intent on beating the Russians that if we weren't really able to do it, they would have faked it. However, we really did do it, and I can no longer understand why there are people who can't accept that.
