Should commission be paid out to a sales person based on a signed contract, or based on collection of payment from the sale? What is the most common practice?

I believe that you recieve a minmum commission from a contract and then additional commission from sales.

If by "contract" you are referring to a sales contract, most commission arrangements call for payment of commission upon execution of the sales contract; however, a portion of the commission might be withheld until the purchase is fully paid for. In some cases, the full commission might be paid upon the sale, but -if the buyer defaults- the company might charge back a portion of the commission, taking it out of commissions due on future sales.
