Yes, it is true that many of your programs from windows 98SE will not work on XP. But the thing is new programs are always being released and I am willing to bet you can find a software solution for whatever you need made for windows XP. There are probably even newer versions of your software for the XP platform too. If that is your only concern make sure you double check before you upgrade!

Quite a few people I know still use Windows 98SE (including myself). Probably because we havent bought a newer PC in awhile. Although XP might be a good move, consider that Microsoft is just releasing their newest Windows "Vista". If your going to upgrade your Windows you may hold off doing it until you get a new PC (which might include Vista). Updating Windows can often cause complications on an older system, beyond programs that may no longer work on it (as they presently do with 98SE).

It's possible that some of your older programs won't be compatible with XP. There is a mode within XP that if it detects an older software app, it will try to run it in a sort of "old windows environment". To make sure about your hardware and software you can always go here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/default.mspx and run the upgrade adviser wizard. It'll let you know what you have on your box that may be an issue if you make the migration and if there is a software update for those apps that will make them work under XP.

You never mentioned how old your computer is, so let me present this caveat: If your computer is more than 3 years old, I wouldn't necessarily advise you to upgrade to XP. If you don't have at least512MB of RAM and a Pentium4 (or AMD Athlon), you may find XP a little sluggish compared to Windows 98SE.
