That is a good question and the only explination I can come up with is that deer is considered game(meaning it is hunted)but then again Turkeys are sold in stores and they are also hunted, so I'm not sure why. Good question though!

that would take the fun out of hunting for your trophy buck. people might buy it from a store but you know what you are getting when you spend a good day out in the woods and harvest your own deer.
-
Because their an expensive piece of shit
-
Because it is not mass produced for the kind of demand that Supermarkets create. For that to happen, deer would have to be farmed, and I'm not sure that they are domesticable.

Certain grocery stores (Publix?) and local independant meat markets can special order Venison or any other meat delicacy for you, talk with your local butcher for more details.

In some areas you can find venison and buffalo at the met counter. Many places will let you order it. But it is very expensive and in limited quantities because of the regulations surrounding the raising of the appropriate animals for slaughter. It's just easier and cheaper to raise cattle or hogs.
