Yes, there are many situations where words or phrases can have exactly opposite or very different meanings .. so differentiating which one is meant is a good skill to learn! I use several factors to decide what someone might mean: 1) what's the context? What's being talked about .. what led "into" that comment .. and what clues does that give me on meaning or intent? 2) Tone of voice. A world of difference in a wish for good fortune vs just the opposite. 3) Non-verbal communication. What's the body language? What about the eyes of the speaker? I always check out degree of eye contact .. and if direct, what are they saying .. as big clues for meaning or intent. ---- All that said? There's a simple tool that could be used right at the start if it fits your style. It's my favorite way. Someone says "good luck". You're not sure which way they mean it? Easiest thing to do is just ask them what they mean! No wear and tear. And I'm quite sure they'll tell you! LOL
