Are stainless steel water bottles better than plastic water bottles - even the ones that are considered safe?

Yes. ANY plastic can leach harmful chemicals into the water regardless of how "safe it is"

Yes. Stainless steel bottles last longer, and as a bonus I've noticed that mine keeps my water colder longer than my plastic bottle ever did.
