Electrical experts: how do i install a new thingie that holds the chain that changes the speed, and turns it on and off in my ceiling fan??? AND, if i have to resort to hiring someone, is it expensive?

it is sexy the way you say "thingie" do you mean the chain or the switch itself - if the switch is broken just get the brand off the fan and go to a good hardware store should run 15-25$ for a new switch. If you need somone to replace the switch may be cheaper in the long run to get a new fan - the service call from the electrician is the nasty part -
