I don't know if it is unique to the middle east or how many cultures share the folklore...warding off the "evil eye" usually has to do with jealousy...you've just had a beautiful baby or grandbaby and want to protect it from "the evil eye" of others' jealousies...there are small beads that look like an eyeball that are incorporated into jewelry..a necklace, bracelet, ring..the point is to have the beloved wear it as an amulet to protect from the evil that comes with jealousy or envy. I was given a necklace with two of those little beads many years ago by a relative.
