I've been attending meetings for many years. Here is the simple answer. Expect to meet very normal people and an educational meeting. Wear whatever you like. Her folks will likely dress nicely in necktie and dress, but you can make yourself comfortable. There are no mysteries or strange ceremonies. Meetings start with a song and prayer. You're welcome to stand or stay sitting, as you like. Depending on the particular program, there will be short Bible-based talks (you might want to bring a Bible and notepad. You can compare what you hear with what you believe) and/or question and answer discussions. You're welcome to raise your hand and comment or just to listen. Meetings end with another song and prayer. Simply put, i suggest you go and enjoy yourself. You will meet friendly people who care about you. Most of them are pretty cool. If you stay to visit afterward, feel free to give your opinion and ask questions. If you disagree with something, you may say so. There's no collection and nobody will expect anything of you. There's really only one rule for attending: Don't disturb others who are listening. Someone may offer you a free home Bible study. Take it or turn it down, as you wish. I doubt if anyone will put you on the spot. Put another way, be yourself, have fun and don't worry about anything. For an hour or so, you will be in one of the safest spots on earth. Please let us know what you think, good, bad or otherwise. Thanks. Enjoy.

I just thought of something else. Nobody has titles. Don't worry about who's Father or Pastor or Reverend. We call each other brother and sister or just by first name. You really can't say or do the wrong thing. Be your normal civilized self and you'll feel right at home.

I think you should attend the local meetings with the visiting parents only if you wish to attend. Just to go somewhere to keep the peace or appease others is pointless. Keeping a seat warm for 1.5 hours is fruitless if you are doing nothing but looking at your watch waiting for the meetings to end. What would be better is if they sat down and explained their beliefs to you and the after they attended their meeetings, shared an interesting point with you from the Bible. If you do decide to attend, a business casual look would be fine if you don't have a suit and tie. Remember, you should only attend the meetings willingly and not out of obligation. I do not like when my mother in law tries to guilt her husband to attend with her, when he decides to accompany her of his own free will, it is much better.

Don't worry about it!! I was brought up as a Jehovah s Wittiness, and my father is still dedicated, They are lovely non judgemental people, normal people who also live every day lives. When others meet my dad for the first time their always really nervous which is silly, Hes a woodcutter in a very rough sort of job, the thing is all the others totaly respect him for being who he is.

some people are fearful of attending our meetings because they think we are like other churches that will want to convert you that same day you attend. this I PROMISE will not happen! as you have been reading you will be greeted warmly and be made to feel very welcomed. don't hesitate to ask any questions. it takes alot more to become a witness than just attend our meetings. that can never happen unless you have expressed the desire to do so. even then there are other requirements to fill. so go, enjoy yourself, and you will probably go out to eat somewhere where you may be accompanied by more than just your girl friend's parents. this way you get to observe the kind of people we are in more detail. i wish you a great experience, and lots of fun. many people don't realize just how much we love to socialize and have great fun, without hearing a cuss word, gossip, or abusing the alcohol. of course as a hispanic we love to salsa and merengue, i think you will be pleasantly surprised!!

we would be happy just to see you there, no matter what clothes you wear if you are a JW then formal wear would be expected in most circumstances but at least be 'well turned out' ask her parents to teach you what the bible says and they'll both be very happy [likely] to show you, ask me and I;ll help you learn

a tie costs £2/£3 for a nice polyester one, smart trousers can cost £14 and I got a pure cotton shirt for £8 from ASDA [part of Walmart group] P.S. you don't need a suit jacket [unless you're giving a talk from the platform-useful also if you are an attendant [but to be an attendant usually you are baptised] but if you can afford one easily they make you look very smart Americans, thats [a bit less than] twice as many dollars with the pound weakening against the dollar. Jehovah expects you to be physically clean, but even turning up at the meetings to learn and draw close to Jehovah is commendable {james 4:8]

if you're female, wearing a skirt would be advisable [should be longer than knee length out of respectI've got friends from all nationalities, I met at Kingdom Halls in Scotland

My comments are oriented towards the core of the issues. I got evidence to back up my comments and this forum is not the place to go further with them. They go to a higher level of sensitivity and comprehension.

JW's are great I was raised as one, allot of people fear them, but it's human nature to fear the unknown and different. They are very kind people who never judge.

Better overdressed than under for church, no? ;-)

never saw it coming-what a nice and humble person you sound by the tone of your question. I hope you have been to a meeting by now and have seen for yourself the wonderful christian brotherhood that only JW'S possess. I love going to the meetings and am actually about to finish preparing a talk to be presented at one.I have learnt so much at the meetings and most of lifes mysteries are a mystery no longer. Studying the Bible with JW'S is definitely the wisest decision I have ever made.Enjoy!
