  • Not sure if you are a parent, or a teen trying to get ideas to tell your parents, so I'll cover both. I am not a parent of a teenage parent, but I was barely out of my teens (a little over 20) when I told my parents. My experience: I was scared to death to tell my folks I was pregnant. I didn't live with them, but I was still very afraid they'd be upset. So, one night, about a month after I found out, I went online and got on MSN. I asked my brother if my parents were about to go to sleep. He said they were in bed but not asleep. It was a calm enough time, so I told him to tell them that I was pregnant. A few tips: 1) If you are a teen trying to tell your parents: NOT the best way to go, and definitely not the most mature. If you think you are mature enough to handle a child, then be mature and just tell your parents what's up. If it makes you feel better, have a plan of action: know before you tell your parents what you are going to do about the baby (whether you are going to keep the baby or not), and if you are keeping him/her, know how you are going to provide for it. If you know your stuff, and have worked out a reasonable and legit plan, showing them that kind of responsibility upfront is the best game-plan. 2) If you are a parent and your daughter has just given you the news, the worst thing you can do is get overly-upset. Remember that she is scared too (if she's got any sense anyways), and that she's entrusting you with the knowledge that she is pregnant. Remember, instead of telling you, she could have just run away with the father, or just plain run away, and never told you or spoke to you again. It is ok to get a little upset, she's your daughter and all parents have dreams of their kids going to school and having a career and THEN raising a family, but this is a hard time for her, too, and the best thing you can do is have a calm discussion about it.
