How do we get our 2 year old male cat to be more accepting of the 2 year old female dog we just rescued fom a shelter?

Make sure you give them each equal attention because cats can be very jealous and demanding of thier owner's affection. Keep their eating areas separate so that they don't feel like they are competing for food too. (plus, it'll help keep the dog out of the cat's food, making it less likely that the cat will feel overpowered) Another important thing is to watch your behavior as well. Cats can sense when their owners reward another pet more often and will feel like they are getting replaced. Once they have their own space to eat and sleep, they will establish with each other where the boundaries are and they will soon learn to get along and warm up to each other.

Time Time Time. Also don't make a big deal out of either one of the animals. If you pay more attention to one more than the other there may be more problems like spraying.
