Help answer this question below.

My just turned 8 year old daughter is having trouble in school. She's in 3rd grade. She's always taken a long time to do her homework. I think she has focus problems. Any suggestions on helping her focus without medication?

    A focus problem is a very general term. Focusing doesn't necessarily mean she has ADHD by any means. At school it may be necessary for the teacher to move her desk up beside hers or his. Also she should stay away from the windows - too distracting.
    It might help if the teacher breaks down her work into sections for her - eg. only complete 7 or 8 out of 10 questions on a sheet - or perhaps less if the subject matter is difficult for her.

    You might visit the teacher and ask her for information. Find out if the curriculum is too hard or too easy for your child. If that's the case she can be assessed in the SERT office (special education resource teaher) to determine if she is struggling or if she is advanced (boredom will set in and she won't want to do the work).

    If you suspect ADHD you should ask the teacher which behaviours she observes in your child each day as she sits in class and would she recommend you take her to your doctor for a discussion? Even if your child has an attention problem no one says she has to go on meds. Sometimes changing a child's diet can make a big difference.
