The ones that do it consistently, I dont bother to let them know, they obviously dont care. If it is a new person, I will say something.
-
I usually do both. However, I'll only flag something as a dupe if I'm really, really sure I'm right.
-
Em I dont like flagging duplicate Questions like if I see one I tend to leave it because I dont want to make someone feel like crap thats just me though :)
-
It's not a bad thing to accidentally ask a duplicate question and shouldn't be viewed as punishment when flagged. I always flag, because the whole point is to get all the answers in one place, for the user who does a search for the question. It is very time consuming to have to click on every single question that shows up in the search, when they should have all been merged in the first place.
-
duplicate questions dont bother me, the previous one may have been answered by an entirely different crowd, so the same question, with new ansers is still interesting and informative !! :)
-
Honestly , I pretty much ignore duplicate questions. I know, they are supposed to be flagged... But, most of the time I have a question flagged as dupe, and it isnt, the staff wont listen to me, and when I flag a dupe, the staff says it isnt. This is not very encouraging, so I just leave it to the pros... whoever that may be.

I've tried both: telling the user that the question has already been asked before, and silently just flagging the question as a duplicate. I think it's better to just silently flag the question as a duplicate. I don't see the point of telling people: "hey, this is a duplicate." I just do the thing and move on.

flagging them is a waste of time. when I find a duplicate question I ignore the latter of the two.
-
let them know.
-
I usually just flag, unless the question is about duplicates and is a duplicate. :p
-
if you mean someone who's posted the same question twice by accident, I just flag. I've done that myself once, and I've seen several old members do it too, so I know it's not something you should rant about. If, however, it's a duplicate of an existing question, and it's very obvious that the question is a duplicate, I might leave a sarcastic comment reminding them to check the damn list of similar questions before clicking "submit"
-
I think that it really shouldn't be an issue. Just flag it, if you don't want to see it. I don't think someone should get offended by this, and if they do, i believe they're being far too sensitive.
-
Flag. Why waste everybody's time? Posting an answer that it's been flagged as a duplicate and linking to the other question would be considerate to the person and those that might waste time answering it.
-
I used to let them know, but after being DRed severely for it almost every time, I quit doing it unless the person is making many of them, dozens, one after the other and you can tell they are on right now. So I just want them to know about it instead of getting all mad later when they get all these emails about it. Usually they thank me. But people may still Dr me LOL!!!
-
Tell them, but I get it over with by flagging it.
-
Letting them know usually does not help much. A flag is not the definitive decision, which will be taken by the Staff, so if you write a comment and the flag is rejected, it is quite dumb. And some people will hate you for flagging their questions... Anyway, it is better to flag only when you are quite sure.
