A mental disorder is an illness, it might not be as visable as a physical illness might (not all physical illness show) but an illness the same. I can understand the hardships since I had a girlfriend who had a mental illness and she would say things that she didn't intend. And before anybody questions, that wasn't the reason we broke up and we still talk and visit occasionally. Whoever came up with the saying "Sticks and stones, etc" was so wrong, names do hurt. But realize that it is the illness talking and if you want to help your boyfriend, make him to the best of your ability - understand this. I do wish the both or all three of you well and just be supportive. Anger is a path that leads to hopelessness, so please don't let the the words arouse that emotion. Help her and understand her illness, nobody wants to be ill.

It depends on what disorder it is. I know that for Bipolar, you really do need to ignore what they say if they are on a low because nothing you say will cheer them up/stop them from being hyper. And that is something he has to figure out for himself. I only mentioned that because it's a pretty popular mental disorder, which one does your bf's mom have?
