  • In the entire Five Books of Moses, the word Satan only appears once! PLUS, it's used as a VERB. It's in Numbers 22:22, where Balaam heads out to curse the Children of Israel. G-d sends an angel to "Satan" him, i.e. to obstruct him. That defines the term Satan as a term meaning obstruction; later in Scripture (like in the book of Job) we know that we're referring to an angel of G-d (not His nemesis), whose job happens to be to interfere with a person's spiritual progress. Other places where you can read about the "Satan": Zechariah 3 Job 1 (Note how Satan appears there with the other angels, i.e. a subject of G-d like the rest of them) Psalms 109 1 Chronicles 21 2 Samuel 24 (though the word Satan is not used there)
