Can Tai Chi be used as a Martial Art ? It consists of really slow movements. I can't imagine a Tai Chi martial artist defend himself if two thugs get him on the street.

Tai Chi is a martial health science ... Tai Chi Chuan is a deadly combat art !!!

Tai Chi has been referred to as the dance of life ... while Tai Chi Chuan has been referred to the dance of death ... the same move done slowly, at the speed of a long slow deep breath, is just a healthy exercise ... while the exact same motion pattern move done at the high speed of the pulse, can be extraordinarily devastating to your opponents.

Tai Chi can be used as an offensive art and in reality is probally far more effective then either Judo or Karate. It is often misunderstood by those who have never practiced it, but it contains alot of subtlety and complex movements that would indeed devestate any thug, be there one or ten.

Also, unless your an idiot, you would have to already know that when Tai Chi is used in combat it is done as fast as any other martial art, if not quicker.
Tai Chi is only slow when practiced, not in combat.

As with all martial arts, it's not just offense or defense - it is also a state of mind. You could look at the slow movements in Tai Chi as concentration, a respect for a discipline, and from that you can build a very strong mental and physical foundation, and apply that to other "deadly arts" - if that is what you choose.Think back to a fight you've had, whether in the street or in a ring......Do you remember it? Was your attack calculated, or was it alot of haymakers with your eyes closed? Did you shake afterwords?

A thug got me on the street.
    Though my tai chi training
isn't made in a fighting spirit.
    I threw him so easily
I had to control his landing
to avoid him falling head first.
Slow movements is only a method to improve
accuracy and energy economy, not the goal.

    The rest is strategy.
If someone tells ya "it's no martial art", say "yeah!"
If someone tells ya "it's a martial art", say "yeah!"

If you are attacked by really slow thugs, Tai Chi might be the best response. Otherwise you will want to resort to a faster martial art such as Karate, Judo, Kicking the Thugs in the Stones, Biting, or Shooting Laserbeams Out of Your Eyes.

Tai Chi isn't called the grand ultimate fist for no reason, It is a very effective martial art There are two forms of tai chi one form uses a harder form than the other, If you are into the martial arts like karate try doing your technique at a tai-chi speed and see what you discover in your form.
