I don't want to sound like a prick, but they've been doing this for decades. Many similar GM models over the years. Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant were the same. Mitsubishi 3000GT anf the Dodge Stealth.

In the 50's through the early 70's brands of cars were recognized by their design.different divisions of GM.pontiac, chevrolet, oldsmobile, buick, and cadillac, all had their own identities In the effort to save money, GM found that they could build 4 different models at the same plant, and with minor cosmetic differences still have the different brands and the "cookie cutter " cars were born. Take a Chevrolet Suburban add more 'goodies' call it a Cadillac Escalade...and TAAADAAA add $20,000 to the price tag.

Well here is a history lesson from the American Auto Makers Philosophy of Success handbook in pictures. Oh how the mighty have fallen, because of cookie cutter cars

The concept of a single "Platform" for several different makes and models is to allow higher production runs that reduce the cost for all. Yes it has been done poorly in the past but when done correctly works well for manufacture and customer alike. Yes the Chevy Celebrity, the Pontiac 6000, the Buick Century and Olds Cierra were cookie cutter cars. But, the Chevy Malibu, the Pontiac G6 (sedan, coupe and convertable), and the Saturn Aura are made exactly the same way and have no resemblance to each other. The bottom line is to save you money.
