  • No. Police shouldn't be required to take any college courses. They are police, nothing else. Their job is to enforce the law and make it safer for the community as a whole. Going to college and studying up on 19th Century European Literature will do nothing to make the streets safer. College doesn't make you smart, it doesn't give you more wisdom, it doesn't make you a better person, it doesn't magically give you the ability to make better decisions during a crisis situation. It would possibly change my opinion of the police force if they all were required to pass English 101 courses -- for the worse.
  • no, i don't believe they should require degrees. you do not have to know how to write an MLA essay to chase bad guys or deal citations.
  • Maybe not four years of college, but at least a high school diploma. Here in Polk County, Florida, some of these cops are dumber than a box of rocks and it's obvious they don't have much of an education.
  • No, I do not. Having a four year or even a two year degree doesn't make you a better cop... it just puts you further in debt. :) Also, I have met my share of college graduates who have no common sense. Common sense should be a requirement, but not a college degree. For the record, I am a cop, and I have my 4 year degree.
  • I believe that college should be a requirement for all police officers. I think the time should depend on what the person is wanting to pursue in the law enforcement area. I think the advantages would be that college would help with dealing with different types of people, and how you handle and react to situations. I understand though, that a lot of police work is hands-on and being on the street experience, but also college would help with correct grammar, writing, knowledge of terminology. Just being more educated would help any profession. I don't really see disadvantages, except maybe not having to go to college four years. The public would respect you more, knowing you were knowledgeable and more professional.
