  • I was watching a show about dogs the other day and this subject came up, licking. The show host said dogs who lick alot, whether its people or other dogs, things, are having an "inferiority complex". Im not sure exactly what that would have to do with licking, but thats what he said! Hope this helps a little!
  • Since she's not licking herself...a paw, leg or other body part it's more likely to be an emotional behavior not an allergy. You can help her to become more stable and lick less by giving her something else to do. Training her to do things will both build her confidence, and give her acceptable behaviors to do upon your requesting that she do them. You might want to read up a bit on +R training (positive reinforcement) as it is an excellent training method for building self confidence, and self esteem. It also builds the trust foundation between you and your dog. Massage can also be a great stress buster for dogs as well as humans and you may notice that when you scratch, groom or rub her favorite spots...the ones she can't get to, such as her chest and the front of her neck she "mouths" or licks the air a bit. This mouthing, smacking the lips, licking the air...is part of the "comfort" signals that most dogs (and horses) will do when they just feel right and good about everything around them. I would also guess that the one who does NOT lick so much is the Alpha of the two. She is confident and secure in her position within the family as a whole...the licker most likely has a wee bit of stress going on...and licking comforts her.
