Because the Soviet Union was boycotting the Security Council due to the UN's recognition of the Taiwanese government, the US was able to obtain the Security Council's approval and support for a UN force to counter North Korea's clear act of aggression.

Since USA ( with its vast resource and economic influence ) was the most important member in the United Nations, it was able to influent much of the decision made by the UN. Furthermore, it was part of the policy of containment of the USA to fight in the Korean War. Thus USA can save some of the resource by appealing the UN to send troops there. Also USSR was unable to veto this decision because at that time it was boycotting the UN. This is because USA blocked the entry of China into the UN.
