  • Because the earth's rotation is inclined slightly in relation to its orbit round the sun. In winter the earth is inclined away from the sun in its northern hemisphere, so the proportion of shadow is increased. At the same time in the southern hemisphere the earth is inclined so that the rotation carries a point through more sunlight than shadow and there it is summer. This is what gives us our seasons.
