Unless you meet them in person and get to know them - you won't. If I had ANY doubts about someone ( particularly in an online dating site ) I'd go with my gut feeling every time. Plenty of other potential fish in the sea!

you can't. How do you think pedophiles meet their victims a lot of times? internet dating is dangerous. Anybody will tell you what you want to hear. Meet this person in a well lit very busy place and never be alone with them ..As soon as you let your guard down, trouble can ensue.

Well, unless you're psychic, there's really no way to. It's not uncommon to fudge a bit on those things I mean, who really wants to admit they're thrice divorced and have gained a few pounds since that photo was taken? Take info on those sites with a grain of salt and reserve your final judgment until you spend some time with them, IN person.

While you can never be 100% sure on these things there is always the option of having a friend talk to them online too. Often if a person is lying they will get the details of their lies mixed up. You can also get your friend to call the person on things which might upset them. That way you aren't the bad guy. Still, the only way to know for sure is to meet them. Like others have said, do so in a well populated area. You might even consider a double date.
